Cryoneurolysis

 

 

 

What is it?
Once the nerve is identified as a pain source it can be “turned off”. Cryoneurolysis is the technique by which these nerves are identified and “frozen” in such a way that the impulses being transmitted through the nerve will not be felt beyond that point. This will not affect the motor nerves (the part that is responsible for movement), only the sensory nerves (the part that is responsible for feeling) will be frozen.

The Procedure
This procedure is performed under the guidance of x-ray to provide proper placement of the cryo probe. Once the physician feels confident about the position of the cryo probe, he will direct the technician to send a small sensory current through the cryo probe in order to further confirm proper placement. You will feel a vibration, tingling or a painful sensation in the area of your previous discomfort, which will indicated that the cryo probe is exactly where it needs to be. Further testing of the cryo probe location will be made by motor nerve testing, during which you will feel a thumping or a twitching of the muscles in or around the painful area. Once placement is confirmed the cryo lesioning machine is turned on so that the nerve will be frozen to a temperature of -60 degrees centigrade for approximately two to four minutes at each nerve branch.

After The Procedure
Following the procedure you may have some tenderness in the injected area for a few days. Applying ice to the area will help to reduce any swelling and/ or irritation caused from the injection. Following up with your physician 1-2 weeks following the procedure is recommended to assist in your treatment plan.
